Chrystia Freeland is a Canadian journalist, writer, and politician who has been serving as the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada since 2019. She was also the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2017 to 2019, making her the first woman in Canadian history to hold this position. Freeland’s political career is not typical, as she was previously known primarily as a successful journalist and author.
Before entering politics, Freeland worked for some of the biggest names in journalism, including the Financial Times, The Economist, and The Globe and Mail. She also wrote several books, including “Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else,” which became a New York Times bestseller. Her work in journalism earned her numerous awards and recognition, including being named one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders.
However, in 2013, Freeland made the transition from journalism to politics when she ran for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons. She quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the Minister of International Trade before being appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 2019, she was chosen as the Deputy Prime Minister in the newly elected Liberal government, cementing her position as a key player in Canadian politics.
